Training EHR + practice clearinghouse

Learn the revenue cycle on screens that work like the real thing.

Fernwell gives medical billing, coding and front-office students a full practice EHR and a connected clearinghouse. They book visits, verify eligibility, code, submit claims, read ERAs and work denials, all on fictional patients with simulated payer responses.

  • No installs, works in any browser
  • Role-based practice: front desk, MA, provider, biller
  • Instructor dashboard and answer key

How it works

Every step a real claim goes through, in one place

Students work a clinic day in Cedar Hollow Medical Group, a fictional practice with providers, patients and a payer mix. Each step feeds the next, so a typo at registration really does come back as a rejection.

  1. Schedule
  2. Register
  3. Verify eligibility
  4. Authorize
  5. Check in & collect
  6. Document
  7. Code
  8. Scrub & submit
  9. Acknowledge
  10. Adjudicate
  11. Post ERA
  12. Work denials
  13. Bill secondary
  14. Bill patient
  15. Follow up A/R

Weekly schedule with color-coded appointments for several providers
Remittance list showing ERAs from five payers waiting to be posted

Included: Claimstead clearinghouse

A practice clearinghouse, connected to the EHR

Most training EHRs stop at "claim created". Fernwell keeps going. Claims travel to Claimstead, our training clearinghouse, and come back the way they do in a real office.

  • Eligibility (270/271): coverage, copay, deductible and coinsurance, with real error codes when member details are wrong.
  • Claims (837P, 999, 277CA): batch upload or one-click submit, front-end edits and rejections.
  • Payer adjudication and ERAs (835): allowed amounts, deductibles, CO/PR/OA adjustments, CARC and RARC codes.
  • Claim status (276/277) and authorizations (278): pended, approved and denied requests.
  • Fast-forward: skip the waiting so a class can finish a full cycle in one session.

Claimstead is a simulation. It is not connected to any real payer or clearinghouse, and payer names are used only to make the practice realistic.

Learning Center

Lessons, videos and a glossary inside the EHR

Each lesson explains one step of medical billing and the revenue cycle, then points students to the exact Fernwell screen and practice task for it.

  • 20 lessons from "the revenue cycle at a glance" to denials, secondary claims, A/R follow-up and compliance.
  • Training videos: add a YouTube, Vimeo, Loom or Google Drive video to any lesson, and it plays right in the lesson.
  • Glossary: 150+ terms, from AAA errors to write-offs, searchable and linked from every lesson.
  • On-screen tips: each screen links to the lesson that explains it, and tasks check off as students complete them.

Progress at a glance

See tasks finished, lessons read, notes signed, claims sent, paid and rejected for every student.

Answer key

Worked answers for the sample clinic's cases, plus the steps for every training task.

Fresh start anytime

Reset a student's practice data so they can repeat a scenario, or start a new cohort clean.

Private by design

Each student works in their own copy of the clinic. Instructors see only their own school.

Questions

Is any of the data real?

No. Every patient, provider and claim in Fernwell is fictional, and every payer response is simulated. Students must never enter real patient information.

Does Claimstead send claims to real insurers?

No. Claimstead is a training clearinghouse. It reproduces the formats and responses of real transactions (270/271, 276/277, 278, 837P, 999, 277CA, 835) without connecting to anyone.

What do students need?

A current web browser on a computer. Fernwell works on tablets too, though billing screens are easiest on a larger display.

Which courses is it for?

Medical billing and coding, medical office administration, medical assistant and health information programs, plus self-learners preparing for a first billing job.

Can I add my own training videos?

Yes. Your Fernwell administrator can attach a video link to any lesson, and it plays inside the Learning Center.

How do students join my class?

Share your school's sign-up link or join code. Students request access with it, and you approve them from the instructor dashboard.

Does Fernwell certify students?

No. Fernwell is a practice environment that supports your curriculum. It is not a credential or a certification exam.
